  • Essay / Sojourner Truth Struggles - 872

Isabella was one of the most influential and courageous slaves born and known in the United States. Many do not know her by her birth name, but rather by her released name of “Sojourner Truth”. Truth was an important figure in human rights, such as women's right to vote and the abolition of slavery in 19th century America. His actions could be considered one of the best attempts by a former slave to break the hold of oppression on slaves and women. Truth's importance in American history is groundbreaking, and with her background as a slave and oppressed woman, it has only intensified her involvement and led to surprising, but successful, attempts. Although only good results are mentioned, Sojourner faced many difficulties, ranging from difficult confrontations from activists to disgust from observers. Truth was born into slavery and raised in New York by her mother, Betsey, and father, James. As previously mentioned, her name was changed once she became free in 1826, to signify that she wanted to travel and become a preacher. With his testimonies about “the humiliating nature of slavery and the redemptive power of faith,” his words touched many listeners and rekindled his mission to God. Sojourner's name was a symbol of justice to show the world the "truth" behind what was really happening in the nation. However, she was illiterate; but this did not prove to be a stumbling block to his future courageous deeds. She became a "national figure in the struggle for black and women's liberation", participating in countless tours to spread the message of inequality and injustice. One of his first and most successful attempts at black equality was the approval of African Americans to enter the Union Army to fight. Her act of...... middle of paper ......e was the sole reason for the changes that took place in the nation, but she will be seen as the spark that lit the fire. Battle Creek is a great memorial that honors such a strong-minded woman or what they call a “remarkable woman.” Sojourner Truth/Isabella is an exceptional woman who never took no for an answer. Without her tours, trials and speeches on women's suffrage, the world today might be entirely different. Yes, Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton were also working on the issue of women's suffrage, but Truth seemed to take the idea a step further, with African American women having the same voting rights as whites would eventually have . Sojourner Truth's few fearless actions mentioned above only scratch the surface of his selflessness and perseverance that shaped America as it is known today..
