I Am. I think. I will. Or do I?According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, free will is defined as a voluntary choice or decision. This means that, applied to life, you have a choice in how you live. You can choose your own destiny and decide which life path you want to follow. When reading Anthem, Ayn Rand describes a society in which everyone is equal. No one is superior to anyone else. Everyone is treated the same and has the same opportunities as their brother. But this company comes at a price. No one is capable of thinking or speaking for themselves. They are also assigned a job that they will hold until they are no longer able to work. Society is based on determinism. This is where external forces, such as the council, determine the behavior of men in society. In the Anthem book, no one has free will to live as they wish. The description of how people are raised in the book is a perfect example of how they have no free will. The men and women go to a place called the Mating Palace where “each of the men has one of the women assigned to him by the Eugenics Council” (Rand 41). This happens every spring and babies are born every winter. Not only do women lose their children, but they grow up without knowing their parents. This is an example of determinism because outside forces determine who men mate with. They can't have their children either. Citizens cannot express themselves freely or even have thoughts that are not approved by the council. They dare not speak freely "for they dare not express the thoughts of their minds. For all must agree with all, and they cannot know whether their thoughts are the thoughts of all, and so... .... middle of paper... .... all hands, even the unclean, can access it? What is my wisdom, if even fools can dictate to me what is my life, if I must just bow? , agree and obey?' (Rand 97) Such questions are forbidden in the community These were questions that all men thought about, but which no man dared to speak of. mind of its citizens, accompanied by punishments if anyone thought of such questions Equality was the only exception to society Despite what he was taught throughout his life, he asked questions and. took it upon himself to answer it I stand by my opinion that there was no free will in the book, despite the deviation from equality, the rest of society conformed to the rules and laws. that have been imposed on them since their birth..
