Essay / Discrimination and Fairness for All Marylanders Act...
Across the United States, there are approximately seven hundred thousand transgender people (Times Union 1). The majority of these people face discrimination at work, school, housing, health care, etc. For example, ninety percent of transgender people experience discrimination at work, while more than half have been harassed when accessing public services. There is no doubt that transgender people are trying their best to free themselves from discrimination across the country and with their efforts, they are making progress. Some states are beginning to pass anti-discrimination laws regarding transgender people, and recently Maryland has shown support. On Tuesday, March 4, 2014, the Maryland Senate passed a civil rights bill, called the Fairness of All Marylanders Act of 2014, which prohibits discrimination against transgender people. This allows transgender people to experience less pressure when it comes to “…employment, housing, and public places such as hotels, restaurants, theaters, and sporting venues” (Kunkle 1). The bill faced little opposition in the Senate and received support from most Democratic senators. Unfortunately, the bill is too vague and allows sex offenders and pedophiles to take advantage of it. Additionally, “…the law would subject people to embarrassing invasions of their privacy from transgender people in locker rooms or restrooms” (Kunkle 1). Overall, this bill results in a regression of transgender people in society rather than progress. As soon as the bill passed effortlessly, opponents of the law immediately voiced their concerns and made valid arguments. Sex offenders or pedophiles, thanks to this law, can legally enter bathrooms of the opposite sex and traumatize young children...... middle of paper ...... and Daily Record. Np, March 4, 2014. Web.
