Bipolar disorder is not an easy illness to detect. The patient may suffer for years before being diagnosed and treated. Although this long-term condition can cause many problems in patients, proper treatment can enable the patient to lead a full and productive life. Bipolar disorder is a brain disease caused by an underlying problem in specific brain circuits and the balance of brain chemicals called neurotransmitters. Doctors have imaging tools such as (FMRI) which stands for Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging and (PET) which stands for Positron Magnetic Resonance which allows doctors to take pictures of the working brain of the patient with this disease. MRI studies have shown that the brains of patients with mental disorders are different from those of a healthy person. The brains of children with bipolar disorder show that their brains are about the same as those of children with multidimensional deficiency, a disorder whose symptoms overlap with those of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. It is also very rare for children to develop the condition, although some children call this condition early-onset bipolar disorder.
