    Theme A: Migration and human rights. Ecuador is home to around 50,000 refugees, most of whom are Colombians who wanted to escape the violent conflict in their country. Many refugees say they feel comfortable in Ecuador, yet they face discrimination due to the integration of foreigners. Local and national media often highlight the stereotype of Colombians as drug dealers and criminals. Even school teachers treat Colombian schoolchildren like second-year citizens. Colombian refugees are still considered illegal and marginalized by society. The fall in oil prices in the early 1980s, followed by financial decline in the 1990s, prove to be the causal reason for the migration of Ecuadorians from rural areas to cities and further emigration to other other countries such as Spain or the United States. Most of those who decide to migrate to cities are currently unemployed, looking for an opportunity to find employment to support their families. Those who are unable to attain higher education choose to become economic migrants. Child precariousness, tensions between migrants and locals, mistreatment of workers, economic problems, loss of cultural vision are just some of the many pessimistic effects due to the migration of residents in Ecuador. Ecuador's President Rafael Correa has adopted a new communications law to control information disseminated to the public by the press and media. This law limits and restricts the freedom of the press to publish all possible information. The public accuses the press of not publishing everything that is necessary.
