Essay / Technophiles: Love And Love - 1290
To love is to experience the interactions of emotions between two beings. Beings with artificial intelligence do not have the capacity to love; they cannot feel, just as humans cannot program their emotions into their software. Many claim that artificial intelligence responds in a similar way to humans, leading to a spark of love in subsequent conversations. However, these answers are simply chosen from a predetermined database. Therefore, the love felt by human and machine cannot be considered true love. “Love, as you will see, is not lasting” (Fredrickson 108), it must be renewed to foster the continuation of relationships, and thus, emotionless AIs cannot make progress toward improving their relationship with a human being. This crosses ethical boundaries regarding love, as technology essentially consumes the love lives of others. Those who have a romantic relationship with machines lose the ability to create and maintain relationships with other human beings, because they are conditioned to believe that the love between a machine and a human is more worth it. Due to the lack of connections between techies and the rest of humanity, many techies are turning to artificial intelligence because it is more convenient, easier to interact with, and generates less painful experiences. This results in the personification of AIs as a way for techies to imitate human relationships without actually being involved in a human-to-human relationship.
