  • Essay / Police officers: Their work and their actions: Structure...

In order to understand attitudes towards police work and the actions of police officers, we can use the Structure-agency debate which has three distinct perspectives: structure, agency and structuring. This essay will discuss the best position to apply based on sociological theories and concepts. As stated by Abercrombie (in Van Huyssteen, 2003: 228), the structure-agency debate refers to "the extent to which individuals are the product of social structures, and the extent to which they can act on these social structures." Social structures are frameworks within society that influence how we behave, such as education, family, race, and rules. (Kendall, 2013, p. 119) In other words, the structural agency debate is a debate between three different ideologies that explain and analyze the actions and decisions of individuals. Some sociologists believe that humans have the freedom to make their own choices and decide how they behave (agency), while others theorize that human behavior is determined and influenced by patterns, arrangements, norms and standards. company guidelines (structure). The third position chooses neither, but rather states both; structure and action also play a role in shaping human behavior and attitudes; this perspective is known as structuration; developed by Giddens (as noted in Huyssteen, 2003). Inspector Solomon Makaye; also known as "Fats", Makaye is a police officer that this essay will focus on (revised from A Night on the Town: Chapter Twelve). Inspector Makaye is the oldest man in his unit (located in Ivory Park) as well as the senior leader of his team (Altbeker 2005, p. 201-202). His general attitude towards his job and his role as a police officer is middle of paper... police, he should work for a police department” (Altbeker 2005, p.210). Individual choice, interpretation and understanding of one's situation are aspects of agency. Evaluating the last two paragraphs, it can be said that the structure and the agency together give a clear understanding and explanation of Inspector Makaye. Structuring is the most effective perspective because it describes a broader picture of who he is; its identity as a human identity and its behavior are shaped by individuals and society (Lemert, in Huyssteen 2003). This essay has understood attitudes towards police officers and their work and concludes that to fully understand why their behavior one must go beyond the positions of structure and agency and adopt the structuration perspective, which considers that society and individuals influence officers such as Inspector Makaye.
