When reading a book, the most important thing for a reader is to find something that will make them want to continue reading. Love stories are filled with heartbreaking and intense scenes that attract the audience so much that they never want to stop reading. The Pact by #1 New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult is one such book. The story begins by only stating that a young girl has died and that her lover may have pulled the trigger. As the book continues, the facts of the case are revealed, showing how strong and compelling love for someone can be. The Covenant is a love story like no other that includes gripping drama and makes the reader believe as if they are also a part of the novel. The Covenant is based on a strong bond of love between two people that lasts even after death. Chris and Emily, who have known each other since birth, travel through their lives, attached at the hip. They played together, they grew up together, they fell in love together, and a part of each of them died together. Chris is willing to do anything for Emily, even if it means ending her life. Unlike any other love story, The Pact shows that love doesn't always have a fairytale ending. For example: “I love you,” she said. He kissed her so gently she wondered if she had imagined it. She pulled back slightly to look him in the eyes. And then there was a gunshot” (Picoult, 3 years old). The book changes the fundamental love bond between two people and turns it into something that inspires the reader to keep reading to find out whether true love will win in the end or not. By reading The Covenant, the audience will feel like they themselves are part of the story, if not the main characters themselves. Aside from the drama that unfolds in the courtroom, the friendship between the two children's parents slowly shatters as the truth is uncovered. A secret affair almost arises between Chris's mother and Emily's father while they are both grieving. Overall, The Pact is a dramatic and beautiful love story that will leave the reader feeling like they were a part of the story all along. There is no reason not to read this novel. Based on the strong love between two innocent teenagers that takes a horrific turn, resulting in death. It is up to the reader to decide whether true love indeed triumphs over all, even lives.
