Essay / Understanding diversity leads to equality
Diversity to me means that people of unique cultures, religions and races are grouped together and treated as equals. Diversity is extremely important because if everyone was the same, life would be very boring. In Catholic social teaching, we learn to give dignity to humans, therefore also to diverse humans, because we are all equal. Furthermore, these teachings say that we should love and respect others, but if we have prejudices and other negative feelings towards others, we cannot live fully according to these teachings. Diversity can sometimes be difficult; however, it is essential in everything we do. This is especially true in America, as it is a mixing pot. Say no to plagiarism. Here in America, I've heard a lot about white privilege and how they have easier access to jobs and simply have a much better chance of success. I feel like some people are more privileged than others, for example the rich have more privileges than the poor. In my opinion, this is not fair because everyone should have equal opportunities. I have learned a lot about bias and implicit bias and know that these are wrong. They often encourage scapegoating, and I have personally experienced such cases in my own life. Being an international student and all, when I first came to America, I thought I was going to experience some level of negativity from others. However, it is much more than I had previously imagined. It's not so much verbal as non-verbal. However, I often get nasty looks from people when I'm in public. Many people think that all Muslims are terrorists and that we all get the same title. Even if I go to an airport, I am 70% more likely to be stopped and questioned than other people. I feel extremely embarrassed when someone judges me before they know me, because if they took the opportunity to get to know me, they would see that I am very nice. I learned a lot about being an ally. I can now be an ally by joining forces with others like me. I think a group of international students gathered together could be a very beneficial group. We could all come together and discuss the different experiences we have had and also promote diversity and education to other American students. I think this idea would definitely be successful and help many students who, like me, have experienced stereotyping. I learned a lot about diversity from this course. One example that made me think differently about diversity was this course. Before, I didn't think that people so different could come together and get along so well. However, many people have spoken to me personally and made me feel much better. Through this course, I learned that although we may be different colors, cultures or religions, we are all very similar and have the same goals in life. Keep in mind: this is just a sample.
