Essay / DBQ Chapter 22 - 1252
East Asia from 1450 to 1750, including China, Japan, and Ming China, used many different strategies to build an empire and state, including traveling around the world to come up with ideas for their empire, having a good education system and a strong and powerful government, including women in school and in political events, having different views on religious freedoms and having a tough army. In “Father du Halde: The Chinese education system”, (Document 3), Father du Halde talks about the Chinese education system. In the document he states: “That boys should not learn is an improper thing; for if they do not learn in their youth, what will they do when they are old? This shows that the education system in China was very harsh and strict and students learned a lot. Since the boys who went to school would one day be men, these men would have to make many decisions for China. To ensure that China was on the right path to becoming great leaders and officials, the school system was very prestigious and difficult. This is an example that China needed a good education system to have strong future leaders. In my opinion, the Chinese learning system was difficult because everyone wanted to have great leaders and knew that the students who went to school were going to be future leaders. As it is said in "Matteo Ricci: On the Chinese Government" (Document 5), "It may be said, in praise of the Chinese, that they would usually prefer to die an honorable death rather than pledge allegiance to a usurping monarch. » This is an example that the Chinese people wanted a strong leader or leaders and would rather die than be ruled by a weak leader. The statement shows that all of China, not just government officials,...... middle of document ...... is committed to "Better learning for women" ( Document 11). At that time, women were not allowed to go to school or learn. In some cases, they could not own property or go anywhere without their husbands. There were a lot of different things that boys were allowed to do, but girls weren't. For example, the document states: “The great duty of a woman throughout her life is obedience… When the husband gives his instructions, the wife must never disobey them. In a doubtful case, she must inquire with her husband and obediently follow his orders…. A woman should regard her husband as if he were Heaven itself, and never tire of thinking of how she can yield to her husband and thus escape heavenly punishment. Obviously, this was very different from the mortality book that taught how to treat boys. Even though these documents have very different topics, they can be compared in many ways..
