Essay / The Environmental Effects of Eating Meat - 1335
Animals that are raised on factory farms and the farms are run like any other business. According to the Factory Framing article, Misery of Animals, the factory farming industry strives to maximize production while minimizing costs, always at the expense of the animal. “The giant corporations that run most factory farms have discovered that they can make more money by cramming as many animals as possible into tiny spaces, even if many of the animals die of disease or infection” ( Factory Farming). It's actually pretty disgusting that we eat food that gets passed around in each other's feces and can attract disease. These animals live a life of abuse, but we sit back and say it's no big deal because we'll end up eating them. “Antibiotics are used to accelerate the growth of animals and keep them alive in unsanitary conditions. Research shows that the widespread use of antibiotics in factory farming can lead to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria that threaten human health” (Factory Farming). These animals are not treated with proper care and we act as if they are machines. Chickens, for example, become so large and deformed that their legs can no longer support them. Eventually, they die because they can no longer walk to find food or water. According to Factory Farming, most of these animals have been genetically manipulated to become larger and produce more eggs and milk than they naturally are..
