Essay / “What are your predictions for 2014? Discussion Paper
Everyone has expectations for the future. Some of our expectations are realistic while others are not, and yet we continue to achieve them anyway! Isaac Asimov, like every other human being on this planet, had his own expectations for the future; however, I personally believe he had a huge advantage on his part. When I first read this article, I immediately assumed that Mr. Asimov was an ordinary man from 1964; therefore, he would not have any advanced knowledge regarding the future of science, technology, human development, etc. I was wrong. I reread the headings and subheadings of the article to discover that Asimov was actually a writer and a scientist. If you had taken a random man off the street, I feel like the work might have been a little less biased. Forgive me if I'm overthinking this, but asking a scientist about the technology of the future is (in my mind) cheating because you shouldn't ask a skilled craftsman about the future of their craft and be surprised when you get somewhat precise answer… In other words, of course a scientist knows the future of technology! PLANNING THE NEXT BEST THING IN HUMAN DEVELOPMENT IS HIS JOB!!! Does this mean I didn't like the article? If anything, I loved this story despite the length of the title, but I felt like it could have chosen a better main topic when it came to this particular topic. How is a person supposed to predict the future? Some people may just spout random nonsense and call it fortune telling; however, this doesn't actually count for predicting the future. We can say what we want, but, ultimately, the future is an empty mystery. I think Asimov didn't discuss anything besides technology because that was the only thing he could think of... middle of paper... a smart phone app that starts your car. It doesn't matter what era you belong to because the future will always change in order to adapt to the needs and desires of the public. Humans will continue to overcome each new problem until there are none left; however, this will never happen because life is chaos. With each new development, new problems arise. The future is like a dog chasing its own tail and that is why we always associate the future with either big dreams or the end of the world. We don't want to admit that this will all become more and more pointless as we move forward, so we try to hope for either something better or the end of everything. The future can be confusing, pointless, and completely mysterious, but that doesn't mean we can just run away from it. We will have to face the future, conquer it and benefit from it. We may not know how, but we always know.
