Essay / Euthanasia Essay - 852
Euthanasia is one of the most complicated issues in the medical field due to the debate over whether it is moral or not. Today, the lives of many patients can be saved thanks to the latest medical and technological discoveries. But we still cannot cure all diseases and patients must undergo extremely painful treatments to be able to live a little longer. These patients suffer from physical and psychological pain. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. addresses the subject of just and unjust laws in his "Letter from Birmingham Jail" which questions whether it is just to kill a suffering patient or unjust to take his life even if this no one is in pain. suffering. In my opinion, people should have the right, with certain restrictions, to end their lives as they wish if they suffer from unrelenting pain. Euthanasia comes from the Greek words Eu: “good” and Thanasia: “death”. It refers to the practice of intentionally ending a human being's life in order to eliminate suffering for their benefit. For example, if a person is suffering from a terminal illness and all types of treatments have been performed, but the patient is still in pain: euthanasia could be an option. In “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” Dr. King explains that “a just law is a man-made code that accords with the moral law or the law of God. An unjust law is a code that is not in harmony with the moral law. » (592) With King's description of what is just and unjust, euthanasia would be considered unjust because it contradicts the moral law because someone takes another person's life despite good intentions. Euthanasia is classified into two categories: passive and active. In passive euthanasia, doctors will...... middle of paper ...... reconsider the situation when we have cases of patients who have developed AIDS and the treatment is so severe that their life becomes unbearable. These patients should not be forced to undergo treatments that will end their lives in the worst possible way. Death is seen sooner or later, it must be respected if the patient prefers death to suffering. Suffering without any way to stop it is an act so cruel that humans can do it to one another. God sent us to learn and live the life He showed us, but He also shows compassion and forgiveness during these times. Although euthanasia is described as unjust according to King's definition, I believe that ending a patient's life in order to relieve pain and suffering is "just" only if the patient has made the decision and the doctors did everything they could. Plus, a happy death sounds much better than a painful death..
