Essay / Raskolnikov's Dream in Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment and discover what he really feels inside. The dream suggests that Raskolnikov is a “divided” man; after all, its name in Russian means “to divide.” His personality has a cruel and thoughtless side as well as a caring and compassionate side. Through the dream and the symbols it contains, the reader can integrate Raskolnikov, as well as other characters from Crime And Punishment, into one of the different parts of the dream. Each role played by a character leads to a different conclusion about that character. Raskolnikov himself "fits" into the positions of Mikolka, the child and the mare. If Mikolka, the mare's drunken owner, were to represent Raskolnikov, then the mare would most likely represent Alyona Ivanovna.
