    The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a never-ending fight for land that both sides believe is theirs. Due to past historical events, there is much confusion as to who actually owns this land. Thousands of soldiers and civilians from both sides have lost their lives in the constant fighting for this territory. Israelis and Palestinians have been fighting since around 1880 over the land formerly known as (Jewish) Palestine. After the Balfour Declaration, Jewish people began to migrate to Palestine and Arabs currently living in Palestine were extremely opposed to Jewish immigration. One of the main reasons why the British decided to support the Jews was what the Jewish people had to endure during the Holocaust. Since the Jewish people needed a place to go, their Holy Land seemed like the ideal place for them at the time. Israelis and Palestinians have been fighting over the land since it became a state in 1948, and there have been a number of casualties, both soldiers and civilians, that could have been avoided if not for the fighting. hadn't been so horrible (pbs). The partition plan separated Palestine. into four Arab sections and three Jewish sections and Jerusalem would be administered internationally, but the Palestinians opposed partition. The Palestinians refused to accept the compromise and on May 14, 1948, Israel declared itself an independent state with the approval of the United States and the Soviets (each time). On May 15, 1948, Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon invaded Israel due to its statehood. This started the Israeli War of Independence which was overall a victory for Israel, instead of a clear cut victory which they placed in an armistice (history).
