Essay / Musical Theater Personal Statement
I am very keen to study musical theater at university with like-minded people because I have a keen interest in the subject and hope to pursue a full career in the performing arts. I hope to gain a broad understanding of the industry through my university course; I hope to experience all aspects of theater and music, from acting, singing and dancing to directing, writing, producing and public relations. I also look forward to being surrounded by people with the same motivations and aspirations as me and hope that the competitiveness and ambition of my peers will help me reach my full potential and make close friends. Having been exposed to a lot of music in my early childhood (not just show tunes but also pop, classical, and a variety of other genres), it was inevitable that I would be eager to sing and perform my favorite songs. Then, as I was exposed to theater and dance, I discovered that I was more drawn to musical theater than any other interest. I've come a long way since playing the angel Gabriel in my primary school's Nativity, having performed in numerous musicals and plays with my local amateur theater companies and several larger scale productions . These include: Marta VonTrapp in The Sound of Music with Musical Theater Salisbury; Part of the children's choir in Joseph and His Coat Amazing Technicolor Dream in Bournemouth Pavilion; and recently as a lead dancer in High School Musical with RARE productions at Andover Lights. I have enjoyed performing on various stages and hope that with time and dedication to the course, I can realize my greatest aspiration of performing on a West End stage. It's been my dream to perform on a big stage in front of a sold-out audience ever since I saw Wicked at the Mayflower. It was my first real experience seeing a live production with a professional company and I was overwhelmed. The stunning visuals of the Emerald City costumes, the incredibly designed set that transported the audience to each magical location, the captivating dance of the winged monkeys and above all the raw emotion that emanated from each song, solo and harmony had me completely inspired to want to recreate the emotional catharsis I felt in that theater in my everyday life. Watching the show again at the Apollo Theater, I remembered the deep sense of fulfillment evoked in me as I sobbed for three hours in my seat, but this time all I wanted to do was jump on stage and dance all the way down. at the Oz Dust Ballroom (I would have been well rehearsed.)
