Essay / Technological Advances: Switching to E-Books
Teachers and principals believe the switch to e-books will be a major step in modernizing the city's schools (Lowinger 2). E-books are an online version of a normal standard textbook. Some schools are turning to e-books because the world is becoming more involved in technology. Technology is getting more and more advanced these days. Adults think it is important to teach adolescents to work with new technologies (Springen 2). Technology has come a long way since textbooks came out. Textbooks have developed over the years and can now be made available on electronic devices. Reading e-books doesn't have to be done on a computer. Almost any device used in school can have downloaded online books on it. People can read e-books on small devices like an iPad or Kindle. It just depends on the device it's downloaded to ("What..." 1). Students can download their e-textbooks to any device of their choice, as long as the device supports the eBook being downloaded. While some teachers believe that online books will help students learn better, others believe that students will be distracted by e-books. Schools should switch to e-books because they cost less, students don't need to carry as much weight, and they have more features. Printed books can cost more than e-books; therefore, e-books can help students save money. McNeil said: “A quick look at a textbook retailer will show that the online version of a textbook can be up to 60% cheaper than its print equivalent.” Schools can save a fortune by switching to e-books (10). All the money used for textbooks can be used to upgrade the school or anything else the school needs. E-books can save schools the money they need to modernize their school.
