    The 1920s presented good prospects for peace, but towards the end of the decade and throughout the 1930s, signs of war were forming. Leaders emerged in countries dissatisfied with the results of the First World War. Germany, Italy and Japan took aggressive steps, and neither the League of Nations nor democratic countries stopped them. British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain suggested a policy of appeasement towards Hitler to maintain peace. Europe moved closer to war as these actions took place. World War II had been sparked by the League of Nations' poor judgment in continually appeasing Hitler. On September 3, 1939, the world plunged into World War II. The main reason for this war was the policy of appeasement. Before the war began, in October 1935, Mussolini ordered a massive invasion of Ethiopia. After the attack on Italy, Haile Selassie, ruler of Ethiopia, requested assistance from the League of Nations. In Document 2, Haile Selassie requested help from the League of Nations to stop the invasion and when the League's response proved ineffective, he declared: "God and history will remember your judgment …This is us today. It will be you tomorrow. By then, Hitler had risen to power and was leading the Nazis in the Third Reich. They had also become the largest political party. In March 1935, the Führer (Hitler) announced that Germany would not obey the restrictions of the Treaty of Versailles.
