  • Essay / The representation of Iran in Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi

and feared by us too. Before the Iranian Revolution, the United States government supported Iran and supported the Shah in his attempts to westernize the country. However, at present there is great distaste for Iran in this country and images were recently shown on television of Iranians chanting "Death to America!" This is exactly why Satrapi was again driven to write Persepolis. Most Americans believe the entire country of Iran feels this way, and Satrapi refutes this notion, saying, "A country should not be judged based on the actions of just a few." ยป The sad truth is that only a small part of the country supports this type of extremist ideology, in the same way that a small part of the United States supports white supremacy. Should the United States be considered a country intolerant of racism? No. Likewise, Iran should not be viewed this way.
