The pies include a variety of fruits, nuts, vegetables and even meats. Sayings and beliefs arose, such as "as American as apple pie", as well as beliefs that the first Thanksgiving featured pumpkin and pecan pies, as well as pies that had always been light and fluffy ; but how true are these theories? Pies are often formed using a pastry base that serves primarily as a baking dish, storage container, and serving vessel. For hundreds of years it was the only form of baking vessel, basically everything was a pie. Early pies, often containing meat, were tall, straight, and sealed on lids and floors. These pies were often called "coffins" or "coffins" (the word at the time referred to a box or basket). Pies containing an assortment of meats and sauce components were cooked rather like a modern casserole dish without a pan (the crust itself was the pan, the shell hard and inedible) were open-faced pies known as traps.
