Essay / Life Motivation - 1015
In Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy, one of the main characters, named Levin, says: “I believe that the main motive of all our actions is, ultimately, our happiness staff." In this quote, Levin states what he believes to be the meaning of life; he believes that everyone's goal in life is to find personal happiness. Being happy is the motivation one has to act or behave in a particular way. I believe there are many characters in Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina who prove Lenin's view of life, which is all about finding personal happiness; these characters consist of Vronsky, Oblonsky and our eponymous heroine, Anna. Vronsky is one of the major characters in the novel who does most things out of personal happiness. At the beginning of the novel, Vronsky is single and fulfilling his most primitive desires. An example of this is Vronsky's attitude towards Kitty, which is summarized in a quote: "He did not know that this behavior towards Kitty had a definite character, that he courted young girls without intention of marriage and that such courting behavior is one of the common bad actions among bright young men like him. It seemed to him that he was the first to have discovered this pleasure, and he appreciated this discovery (55). » In this quote, the narrator explains that Vronsky courted Kitty for fun, almost as if it were a game, and had no intention of marrying her, which was unacceptable in Russian society. the era. This “game” gave him a lot of pleasure and happiness, but at the expense of Kitty’s happiness. This shows that his main motivation was his own happiness rather than that of others. Later in the novel, Vronsky displays a need for her own personal destiny...... middle of paper...... she is desperate, ashamed and depressed. Since she commits suicide to escape the misery of life and find happiness through death, this shows that her motivation for these actions was to find happiness. She commits suicide for selfish purposes and in turn hurts everyone who loved her. This demonstrates his motivation for personal happiness. In conclusion, these major characters find their motivation in the search for their own personal happiness. These characters all risk destroying their lives as they were because they were unhappy. They take these risks to try to obtain this idea of happiness. This quote that Levin says also shows the selfish nature of humans. In order to find happiness, these characters had to ignore the feelings and happiness of others. This led them to concern themselves only with their own desires for happiness..
