Essay / ambitions - 979
Individualism is defined as the principle, habit, or belief in independent thought or action. However, society implicitly modifies our perceptions and behavior. From the moment we are born, we become pieces of clay, malleable, waiting for society to create its expectations and standards. The human mind is locked in a barrier that disrupts free thought. We are trying to escape. We try to stand out, to rise above the pack, but overall we are still lumps of brown clay, hardly distinguishable from afar. “The only place he was entirely himself was high on the wire” (McCann 238). Isolated from society, a few steps from death, it is the only place where Philippe Petit feels comfortable. Far above the horizon, Petit rises above the mobocracy, rising like an ocean liner approaching the coast. The thread ultimately represents dreams. At the top of the horizon, dreams bloom, and as we begin life as children, we fill our minds with positive ambitions only to see society tear them down. However, we can overcome the factors that guide our thread for us. Society must learn to live for itself rather than for others. The triangular tool of progress; Believe, dreams, ambitions are always there to be used; however, in today's society, no one taught us this. We are raised on conformity, almost completely eliminating uniqueness from our control. A quote from former Apple CEO Steve Jobs, "Those who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do." Society cannot survive without dreams. The world as we know it was born of ambitions. Dreams put into action create a better world. In the years to come, only a few clay temples of mobocracy will remain. No one can accurately predict the future of society, but it is certain that ambitions will make one generation different from the next..
