Essay / Grenouille becomes God in perfume: the perfume of Patrick Suskind...
The perfume of Patrick Suskind takes place during the period of Enlightenment in France and follows the life of a perfumer, Grenouille, who has a particular sense of smell and travels through France during a trip. to create the perfect scent. Suskind embraces Enlightenment ideals when Grenouille challenges the power of God in response to Grenouille's takeover of his and others' destinies in Perfume. Suskind depicts Grenouille as all facets of God, who embodies the characteristics of Creator, Savior, and Destroyer. The struggles that Grenouille encounters throughout Perfume are linked to the conflicts that God must resolve throughout the Bible. Grenouille creates what seems pure and innocent to him, and through his creation he attempts to save those who have failed. When Grenouille's goals are threatened, he fights back and takes control of his own destiny; he destroys in order to ensure the accomplishment of his objectives. When Grenouille creates, he does so with the intention of creating a pure and perfect substance as God does with his own creations. God creates the Earth in seven days, perfect and pure, according to his own design (New King James Version, Gen. 1:1-31). Grenouille spends seven years in a cave where no smell can invade him and he creates his own world of perfumes. After Grenouille creates his utopia, Suskind writes: “Frog the Great. . . and soon there was not a corner left. . . he had not thrown away a seed of perfume. . . the seed began to sprout and sprout, producing shoots to gladden his heart” (50). Suskind gives Grenouille divine control of a world that has nothing. Grenouille attempts to realize his utopia, but even after seven years of creation, he quickly realizes that he gains little in his pr...... middle of paper ...... o a higher class level. These Enlightenment ideals become the embodiment of Grenouille as he progresses through France on a journey to fulfill a destiny he creates for himself. Grenouille becomes God throughout Perfume. Grenouille's methods and actions allude to how God takes control of destiny and leads people away from impurities. The three facets represent the idea of Grenouille playing a divine role among people. Grenouille creates, saves and destroys and overall improves people's lives during his life. Works CitedGenesis.
