Eighty-eight countries participated in this Olympic event, which brought together more than 2,500 athletes (Wilkey, 2014). Athletes were able to deepen their knowledge of the cultures of different competitors and form lasting friendships. This cross-cultural communication allowed for a deep understanding of their competitors. Not only did the competitors gain experience, but the billions of people watching television around the world were also able to gain knowledge and participate in cultural exchange during this competition.
