Essay / John McKay's Campaign - 771
“The Candidate” is a great example of the inside of a campaign and the inside of an election. Elections include not only the candidate himself, but also the campaign manager, supporters, the candidate's family and the media team. During “The Candidate,” Democratic candidate John McKay uses numerous strategies to “not” win his election for California senator. At the start of this campaign, McKay hoped not to win the election, because over time his view of the election changed, as did his strategies. Many of the campaign strategies used by John McKay include him saying what he wants, doing what he wants. and go wherever he wants. Even though his campaign manager may have strictly shelved the idea, John McKay has always found a way to add his own twist to the situation at hand. At the start of the election he tried very hard to convince the union by greeting them and showing up after work, but towards the end he convinced Mr. Starkey (almost like the union president) by missing him of respect (the union president thought he was joking). He makes Jarmen look like a liar by saying things like: "Why does Jarmen say he will debate with me and then not even show up?!" Once he realized that the speech he gave had moved people, he began repeating it everywhere he went. By doing this, he was instilling exactly what he stood for in their heads. John McKay wanted his campaign to move away from the usual type of machine politics. He wanted to run his own campaign exactly the way he wanted and it would work! When he played by the rules, was a nice guy, and did what his campaign manager told him to do, he received almost no attention. Over time he became more himself and this... middle of paper ...... was turning his head towards his victory and didn't seem happy. He was upset by the attention he was receiving and just wanted to be alone to speak with his campaign manager. This may reflect the goals of the larger party, as they may not achieve the goals they have told people. McKay could fail if he starts acting the way he wants again. “The Candidate” is the perfect example of how an election is run, including campaign strategies, media, debates, and arguments. Although Jarmen's campaign was not fully seen throughout the film, it was clear that he knew McKay was a threat. McKay's idea of running a campaign included his personal touches of not listening to his campaign manager. In fact, listening to what people want and need seems to get their attention and their vote; This is the strategy that won McKay the election.
