  • Essay / Vengeance and Morality: Thoughts on Poe's Work

Usually, I would never find myself reading something this dark. Surprisingly, though, I really enjoyed everything about it. However, I wonder if I'm just drawn to the way Poe writes or the actual darkness involved in this story. I think Poe's personal life changed the way he wrote. Poe was never in the best state of mind, which is probably why his story was so hateful. Therefore, I'd like to believe that I'm more intrigued by how he writes specifically versus typical dark stories. According to “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allen Poe, revenge can take over anyone. Like most people, I too found myself looking to the side one day, bored. It takes a lot for a calm person like me to become resentful, but like Montresor, it's possible to get so angry that a revenge plot begins to develop.
