Essay / History of the Church: The Protestant Reformation - 883
Why is the Protestant Reformation considered an important event in the history of the Church? The Protestant Reformation is an important event in the history of the Church. It was a protest of the people against the popes and the leaders of the Church. They wanted reform. People discovered that the Church was not telling them the truth about Jesus and his beliefs. This had a huge impact in Europe and around the world. In Europe, in the 16th century, every city had a church or cathedral. The majority of people were Catholic. Church leaders gained a lot of power and abused it. The Church was corrupt and abused its power by bribing people. The pope or priest would tell a person that if they paid they would pray for their sick relative or if they died they would pray for them to go to heaven. If they didn't pay, they told them their loved one would go to hell. People thought making loud noises was the right thing to do. People could not read the Bible because there were very few handwritten copies and they were all in Latin. This meant that they believed everything their leaders told them. The money the churches received was not used to help people. They used this money to build huge cathedrals and houses. An example of this is Pope Leo X who was given so much money to build St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Printing was invented in Germany in 1453 by Johannes Guternburg. This was an important part of the Protestant Reformation because it allowed the Bible to be printed in many different languages so that everyone could read it. Reading the Bible, people did not understand that what their leaders were doing was wrong and large protests began. The people of the community started...in the middle of the newspaper......which resulted in the formation of many new beliefs and religious beliefs. Importantly, this allowed people to gain knowledge of religion that was previously only held by leaders of the Catholic Church. wiki/Martin_Luther#The_start_of_the_Reformationhttp://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/reformation.htmhttp://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/break_rome.htmhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_VIII_of_Englandhttp://en. wikipedia.org/wiki/English_Reformationhttp://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protestant_Reformation#The_consequenceshttp://www.historyonthenet.com/Chronology/timelinebreakrome.htmhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ninety-Five_Theseshttp : //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thirty_Years'_War#Origins_of_the_War http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puritan
