Essay / Self-Reflection Essay - 1769
Many aspects of my “self” have come into clearer light since I have been observing the other side of the globe for some time now. After reading Chapter 11 of Communication Issues Facing a Global Identity and thinking about some opinions, feelings, and thoughts, I came to better understand what is called the blending or transformation of local and global identities by connecting experiences and the ideas presented in the article to formulate a new recognition of the transformations that we are all experiencing in the world. Much of my contribution comes from personal thinking about technology and communication and where that thinking might take us in the future. One of the very first questions asked during the readings was to think about the influence of technology on my communication with family and friends. It's funny to think how different my life would be if technology like this never existed. Would I have chosen to move five hours away from my family to attend Carleton University if I knew I wouldn't be able to Facetime or Skype them from home? Would I have been willing to move halfway across the world for an entire year? Honestly, I don't think I would have even made the trip to Ottawa if it hadn't been for face-to-face interaction on a computer. I sincerely believe that technology has allowed me to sum up the courage to leave everything behind without doubting it for a single second. Having the ability to call my parents anytime, anywhere, or to speak with my grandparents from Orlando, or with my best friend who is currently on exchange in England, or with my fellow BIBers from around the world, is nothing short of amazing to think about. and it's hard not to like it. Another question in the reading asks...... middle of article...... the reason globalization is becoming so Americanized by pop culture is because the United States depends on it. The United States wants to be the symbol of happy and comfortable life in all parts of the world. They strive to achieve this because of the economic and political factors involved and because it guarantees the future and security of the country. By developing their own culture, they can ensure a secure and prosperous future. Globalization and the expansion and adaptation of Americanized pop culture seem inedible. It seems unfair, but to improve social classes and technology in the world, global connectivity is necessary. However, having said that, it is difficult for me to look at a country like Argentina that truly has a wonderful way of life where millions of people have dedicated their lives to their respective cultures, beliefs and stories..
