    After Ice-candy-man subtly reveals his jealousy towards Masseur, Lenny comments: "I become aware of the twilight that has gathered in the shadows on the manure-covered veranda that lies thick behind the open door of Ayah's quarters,” which foreshadows Ayah's demise at the hands of Ice-candy-man (Sidhwa 134). Sidhwa uses dusk and shadows to represent the turmoil and anguish that Ayah will encounter and the open door symbolizing Ayah's trust which will soon be violated by Ice-candy-man. When Lenny questions why the number thirteen is considered unlucky, Mrs. Pen responds by stating "...about Christ, the twelve apostles and the betrayal of Judas and the crucifixion of Christ" (Sidhwa 142). Sidhwa uses this to show that just as Judas betrayed Christ, Ice-Candy-man betrayed Ayah. He turned his back on Ayah and, through his actions, put her in a devastating, life-changing situation.
