News broadcasts were an essential part of many people's lives long before the invention of television. As technology evolved, the role of the news anchor shifted from the radio to the television screen. In these early years, television news did not adhere to the same conventions as modern television news. The shift from radio to television as the primary source of broadcast information has posed new challenges. To do this, networks were forced to experiment with how stories and new anchors would be presented to their viewers (Conway, 2007). News anchors who were once popular with the public could no longer be sure that that popularity would continue. Audiences, once captivated by the voice of an invisible man transmitted over the airwaves, were beginning to lose interest in watching a man, eyes downcast, reading prepared lines from a card (Conway, 2007). It became clear that the format so often used for radio newscasts would no longer be sufficient when applied to a visual medium like television. Over the years, television networks began trying new ways to captivate their audiences again. During this early period of information dissemination, many of today's familiar conventions would often be developed through experimentation. The use of graphics, video footage, pictures, and other visual aids for the presenter on set were all developed during the early years of television news (Conway, 2007). These developments could then be used as further additions to the news delivery by the presenters and give the audience something more to see on their screen.
