Essay / Acid Rain: The Causes and Effects of Acid Rain
When a large amount of acid rain falls in an area over a period of time, it can harm the environment for all the creatures that live there. Acid rain can make a lake acidic, which will most likely kill the majority of animals living in that lake. (McCormick 16) This is happening all over the world. Michael Hopkin, journalist and author of "Acid rain still hurts Canada" states that "North America's lakes and streams are struggling to recover from the effects of acid rain, despite reductions in emissions of pollutants that are the cause. Without further reductions, it could take millennia for the worst-hit sites to recover, environmentalists say. It can also kill animals that rely on the lake for food. When a food source that animals in an area depend on to survive is diminished or even completely eliminated. The animals that depended on them will either die, posing an even bigger problem for that region's ecosystem, or they will have to find a new source of food. If the new food found by the animal is already a food source for another animal which then causes competition for food, this may reduce the numbers of one or perhaps even both animals. All of this can happen because of acid rain and its effects on the environment. On the EPA student site, there is an article that shows how acid rain can affect an ecosystem's food web. “This process continues throughout the food chain. SO,
