    Addiction is a condition that occurs when a person exhibits excessive patterns of harmful use of a particular substance. At first, this continued substance use becomes compulsive and can greatly interfere with daily responsibilities. Once substances appear to control the user's behavior, it is difficult to reach that person and understand their means of decision-making. Addicts are not always aware that their decisions are causing serious problems not only for themselves, but also for those around them. A person dominated by their addictions can lose family, friends, and ultimately themselves. The one constant thing that every human being has when they are born is their family. Every situation varies, especially in today's complex society, but ultimately, every person has someone who has been unconditionally there from the beginning. If a person is lucky enough to have a strong family base, it is likely that their family will be by their side through all the trials and tribulations. This does not mean, however, that loved ones are not directly affected. There are many serious and harmful consequences of drug and alcohol abuse, whether you or a family member is the person using them. Substance abuse has distinct effects on family structures, especially when it develops into a full-blown addiction. Drug and alcohol abuse have been a societal problem for as long as we can remember. The initial reasoning for using a substance can certainly vary from person to person. For teenagers, it may be about fitting in with their peers. For adults, it may be about unwinding from stress. Halfway through my senior year, I was kicked out of my high school due to consistently poor attendance. I never blamed my father because it was ultimately my fault, but I learned a lot from hitting rock bottom for the first (and last) time. I learned that addiction and substance abuse should never be taken lightly. There are things in this world that are beyond us, and sometimes we need to surrender to professional help. Support and intervention are needed, not only for the substance user, but also for their loved ones. This is essential to maximize its overall natural potential, despite their chaotic environment..
