Essay / The influence of advertising on fast food - 1475
“If today's young people occasionally consumed fast food, it would not constitute a public health crisis” (Harris, et al. 2010 ). The one thing everyone wonders is how fast food companies manage to have so many loyal customers despite all the non-nutritious food they provide to their shoppers. The answer is advertising. The power that advertisements have to influence decisions and affect people's lives, especially younger people, is astounding. Advertisers know exactly how and who to target. In his book Fast Food Nation, Schlosser explains to the reader how advertisers use specific techniques such as "cradle to grave" to create lifelong consumers in children. Schlosser, like many other researchers, has found that advertising to children when they are younger makes them loyal to the company, and a child's "brand loyalty" can begin as early as age two years (Schlosser, p. 43). Fast food advertising exploits and harms children everywhere. So it is important for people to take precautionary measures and stop this outbreak. In order to advertise and attract more consumers, advertisers know that they have to deal with certain factors such as the age element. Today's children spend the vast majority of media spending, sometimes as much as 44.5 hours or more per week, watching television, on a computer, or on gaming screens (American Psychological Association, 2009). That being said, this allows fast food advertisers to know exactly where they can capture young people's attention. When targeting younger children, a study by Bernhardt showed that sixty-nine percent of advertisements aimed at children included toys and that, in one way or another, tie-ins to films were present (2013 ). The American Psychological Association said in its research that children six years and younger...... middle of paper ...... lie to children and adolescents so that the consumption of unhealthy foods can stop 'be purchased. Limit fast food advertising on children's television networks, end unfair marketing targeting children (ads focused on promotions, not food), and ensure that specific age groups are not targeted in some way will all benefit a child's health. These days, the way kids consume fast food is out of control. Fast food advertising seems to have its grip on young people and certain measures must be taken to put an end to it. Fast food advertising appeals to children of all ages, but the ways it harms and exploits young people is often ignored until it's too late. Everyone is aware of the external harm caused by fast food, and that is exactly why parents, schools and the government itself need to be careful and take precautionary measures..
