  • Essay / Child Sexual Abuse - 872

Child sexual abuse has become increasingly well known in the United States over the years. The number of reports and children involved in these reports is shocking and worrying. According to the National Child Abuse Statistics (2013), three million reports are made each year and six million children are involved in these cases of abuse in the United States, 9.1% of which are sexual abuse. Children are victims of sexual abuse in one or more ways and warning signs can help save these children and prevent the after-effects of sexual abuse caused by their abusers. The United States has some of the worst child abuse statistics. “It is currently estimated that a third of all children are victims of sexual abuse before the age of 18” (Bogorad, 1998). Among these children who sexually abuse, most know their attacker. Usually, it is a family member or close relative who abuses the child. According to Bogorad (1998), "more than 70 percent of offenders are immediate family members." This is the main reason why most children do not tell anyone about their sexual abuse. They know the offender, like him or don't want to get him in trouble. “Sexual attackers are generally men” (Bilginer, Hesapçıoğlu and Kandil, 2013). It's a well-known fact, but women also sexually abuse children, just as much as men. Most child victims of sexual abuse are girls, but boys are still targeted, just not as much as girls. “One in four women are victims of sexual abuse [while] most professionals estimate that one in ten men, and perhaps as many as one in six, are victims of sexual abuse as children” (Definitions , Scope and Effects of Child Sexual Abuse, nd).
