Essay / Family within the family of the 1950s - 1007
The family of the 1950s claims to have provided a more favorable economic and social environment for the family (Coontz, 29). With all the mothers staying at home, it was easier for women to make friends and establish connections. More mothers could become involved in their children's lives. Yes, in today's society there are mothers who are still very involved in their children's lives, but it is more difficult for them to do so. For the majority of 21st century families, “this really extends to all kinds of family structures” (Schulte). Women today are working and have more independence than ever, which has created all of these different structures. “Many people assume that dual-earner families are now the predominant family structure” (Schulte). Women have now taken on the role of generating some income to also help support the family. Today the minority has the nuclear family of the 1950s. There were more jobs for men and they could provide for the family so women didn't have to.
