Who sets the ethical limits that prevail in our society? Is each individual responsible for their own actions, even if their morals may be different from those of others? Ethical judgments are made for each individual separately and some of them are based on their own emotions or their own reason. Many factors influence ethical judgments in a society or culture. In my essay, I will use reason and emotion as means of knowledge, because I believe that in making ethical judgment in the natural sciences and arts, a person's emotion and reason play a role. The discovery of new knowledge in natural sciences is mainly done through controlled experiments, while artists can express their knowledge in a different way with images, sculptures, films… In both areas of knowledge, ethics cannot be excluded. Art has more freedom of expression without receiving negative reactions from viewers or society, while a naturalist must be aware of many ethical limitations for their experiment to be ethically acceptable. My claim is that ethical judgments do limit the methods available in producing knowledge in the arts and natural sciences, but the limits are stricter when it comes to conducting experiments than creating works of art. Ideally, an objective point of view should be taken into account when evaluating this claim, but our emotions can be stumbling blocks for ethical judgments. First of all, it must be considered that if there were no experiments done with modern medicine that resulted in something that was previously unimaginable, there would not be much progress in medicine.
