Essay / Diyssium and Dystopia - 943
Dystopian fiction is a type of fiction often described as a "nightmare" world, where society is primarily dominated by domination and cruelty. In the novel "Blindness", written by Joe Saramago and the film "Elysium" directed by Neill Blomkamp, they both presented important and common characteristics of dystopian societies. The two protagonists of the film and the novel have many similarities and differences. In both the novel and the film, citizens live in a dehumanized state and the natural world is banished and distrusted. These similarities and differences will be discussed in relation to today's society. The plot of Blindness and Elysium demonstrates that citizens live in a dehumanized state. In Elysium, Earth's citizens are struggling to live since Earth has become overpopulated. Lack of health care is a major problem for citizens because the government does not provide them with enough care. This is unfair to the citizens on Earth because the citizens who live on the space station called Elysium receive all the health care they need thanks to the Med-Bay which can cure any medical problems or problems the citizens have. Citizens on Earth do not have access to Med-Bay. In one of the scenes of the film, Max, the protagonist, injures his arm and tries to heal it by going to the hospital. When he is at the hospital, he finds that there are many other people who also need medical attention. Many doctors and nurses are struggling to help people, as there were many of them. This scene demonstrates that citizens live in a dehumanized state. Similarly in Blindness, citizens who go blind from epidemic blindness are forced to stay in a mental hospital...... middle of paper ......about today's healthcare and the government system. Not all countries in the world have the right to healthcare, such as parts of Asia, Africa and the United States. It is important that people have good health care. In the United States, you have to pay for health care such as surgeries and clinic visits, whereas in Canada, this is not the case. If people around the world cannot get good healthcare, it can lead us to a dystopian society. In conclusion, the novel Blindness and the film Elysium criticize today's world in terms of health and the political system. They both exhibited important and common characteristics of dystopian societies. In both the novel and the film, citizens live in a dehumanized state and the natural world is banished and distrusted. These types of dystopian novels/movies show what can possibly happen in the future.
