  • Essay / The Taking of America - 1857

The federal government doesn't need more money. They must learn financial responsibility. Giving more money to the federal government is like helping a drug addict. One way to address this problem is to downsize government as a whole. After downsizing, we must reorganize government to best meet the needs of the people. From the national debt to the Constitution, power has been overstepped and abused in the federal government. The federal government has lost touch with the people and does not know what they want; they must therefore allow States to exercise more control. The federal government will first have to give up much of its power. The Constitution is the distributor of all powers. It defines the powers of the federal and state governments. In Article 1 of the Constitution, the federal government has the power to regulate interstate commerce. The problem is what the federal government has done with its power. The federal government has expanded the use of this power to the point that it can now regulate intrastate commerce (Greve), because the effects of intrastate commerce can influence or modify interstate commerce and the federal government should therefore be able to regulate it. Farmers are unable to grow certain crops or must sell their crops at a certain price (Stohr), which limits the free market and over-regulates an industry. The federal government also subsidizes certain crops to make prices artificially low, but to compensate for this shortage, the government has levied a tax. Should citizens of all states be forced to give their tax money to farmers? The federal government has increased the federal spending budget and decreased current revenues since the early 2000s, leading to today's massive deficit and large federal debt (Posner). Many Americans have followed the federal government's bad example, as the average household credit card debt hovers around eight thousand dollars. The federal government must demonstrate fiscal responsibility not only to resolve the current debt crisis, but also to avoid the certain economic shutdown that will result from inaction. One of the best ways to cut federal spending is to cut many social programs that people can't afford. Not only that, but abandoning other social programs in favor of the states. Social programs are nice for those who need them, but represent a heavy tax burden..
