Essay / Critical approach to organization - 2397
According to AJ Mills, T. Simmons and JH Mills, a critical approach is defined as "an approach which takes as its starting point the concern to address those aspects of organizational arrangements which have a negative impact on peopleā (2005, p.13). The aim of this approach is to critically analyze organizations and bureaucracies, as this not only provides a better understanding of social problems, but also aims to promote social justice and equality. The critique ultimately explores the harmful effects that organization and bureaucracies can have on people (Mills et al., 2005). Thus, the critical approach will be used to guide me in my analysis of the problem that I experienced in my agency, because it had a negative impact not only on the patient but also on me as a social worker. Analyzing from a critical perspective provides insight into the organizational and structural conditions that ultimately shaped my decision and forced me to confront an ethical dilemma resulting from the issue at hand. As mentioned previously in my observation notes, my internship takes place at Humber. River Hospital Women and Children's Health Program (WCHP). The problem I faced was my inability to provide bus tickets to a teenage mother and thus she could not frequently visit her baby who was in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). It became more than just a problem, as I was faced with an ethical dilemma that not only impacted me but also the patient. This dilemma was whether or not to call the Children's Aid Society (CAS) due to the patient's history with the society and financial instability. I knew the CAS could provide support but I did not want this young mother to be controlled by the child protection system...... middle of paper ......f the patient and fail to not to provide funding for other services that patients may need. This includes social workers. Social workers receive no funding, which ultimately has a negative impact on them as they are limited in the services they are able to provide. Additionally, managerialism also impacted my inability to provide services to this young mother since the final decision was left to the manager rather than the social worker. These obstacles created by a neoliberal state ultimately created an ethical dilemma for me, which consequently also had a negative impact on my patient. To bring about change, some form of resistance is necessary. Unfortunately, this may not achieve social justice, but it will enable transformative change in practice. To achieve social justice, organizations must move away from neoliberal ideologies.
