  • Essay / Effects of Wealth in The Great Gatsby - 713

Title You would think that being rich would be a simple and satisfying life. In the book The Great Gatsby, by Francis Scott Fitzgerald, proves that living the high life is not so happy. Being rich can corrupt life. An example of this is the book's main character, Gatsby, who is one of the richest people in New York. Since he committed criminal acts to earn his money, he cannot gain the love of his life, Daisy. A rich person can live a corrupt life because upper class people are not always happy, society considers them as someone formal which leads him to live a false life and believe all his life that the world revolves around you and this money. can do whatever he wants. Just because rich people can have almost anything they want doesn't mean they lead happy lives. According to the text, "...his dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail. An example of this is "Gatsby bought this house so that Daisy would be just across the bay" (Fitzgerald 78) .It doesn't matter if Gatsby wasted his money on an extravagant house, if he doesn't have Daisy, he has no reason to live. Gatsby thought that by having a wealthy lifestyle he could do what he did. he wanted and got everything he needed, but in the end, he couldn't do those things Another example is when Fitzgerald describes Myrtles' living space as "...a small living room, a living room." small dining room, a small bedroom and a bathroom” (Fitzgerald 29, people tend to act falsely when they feel rich because they believe the public will care about their wealth). and will want to be like or with them People only want to be rich because of the glamor and the title of being a high class person. That being said, wealthy individuals believe they can do whatever they want as long as they have the means to do it.
