Essay / The 11th Hour Documentary - 1122
The 11th Hour is a 2007 documentary film, created, produced and narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio, about the state of the natural environment. It was directed by Leila Conners Petersen and Nadia Conners and financed by Adam Lewis and Pierre André Senizergues, and distributed by Warner Independent Pictures. Its world premiere took place at the 60th Cannes Film Festival 2007 (May 16–27, 2007) and it was released on August 17, 2007, the year the Fourth Assessment Report of the United Nations Panel on Global Warming , the IPCC, was released and about a year after Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth, another documentary film on global warming. With contributions from more than 50 politicians, scientists and environmental activists, including former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, physicist Stephen Hawking, Nobel laureate Wangari Maathai and journalist Armand Betscher, Paul Hawken, the film documents the serious problems facing the planet's vital systems. Global warming, deforestation, mass extinction of species and the depletion of ocean habitats are all addressed. The premise of the film is that the future of humanity is in danger. The film offers potential solutions to these problems by calling for restorative action by reshaping and rethinking global human activity through technology, social responsibility and conservation. Experts interviewed stressed that everyone must do their part to reverse destruction and climate change. Man's role in environmental destruction is explained from the perspectives of several different professional fields, including environmental scientists, oceanographers, economic historians, and medical specialists. The many experts called upon in this documentary have effectively demonstrated that a... middle of paper...... is the norm, and this must stop soon or there will be no feedback. The population explosion of recent years does not seem to have a happy ending. With average life expectancy increasing and more people having children in record numbers, dark days truly lie ahead. If there is any concrete hope, it is that of the possibility of producing renewable energies. The technology is there now, we just need to make the appropriate adjustments within our governing bodies to allow it to flourish. Overall, 11th Hours paints a very bleak picture of what our future holds. Even though it is too dark and focused on a fear factor, it would be a good idea to take its message to heart.
