  • Essay / Pretties by Scott Westerfeld - 950

The book I read was Pretties by: Scott Westerfeld. This book is the second volume in a trilogy. The first book is Uglies. You will understand Pretties better if you read Uglies. Pretties was about a girl named Tally who finally became pretty. At first, she thought it was what she wanted, until she rediscovered the truth about becoming pretty. In the first book, Tally met David, whose parents knew this truth. And this truth was horrible. Becoming pretty had its drawbacks. When you had the operation to make you pretty, the doctors inflicted damage on your brain, preventing you from remembering things from when you were ugly. The specials especially wanted Tally to have the lesions because she knew the truth, which she wasn't supposed to know. She had also traveled to a secret location called the Smoke, which was destroyed in the first book. But after Tally kisses a guy named Zane, she begins to remember. Zane had started to remember it long before and suspects something is wrong with the pretties, but isn't really sure. As they both slowly remembered, they decided to try and save themselves. Early in the book, a friend from Tally's bad days broke into New Pretty Town and sneaked into a party she was attending. His name was Croy and he had come to give Tally a note she had written to herself when she was ugly. The letter warned her about the lesions and told her she was a "test subject" for a pill that could possibly cure the lesions. Tally also wrote to herself that she had agreed to this. To obtain the pill, Tally and Zane went through a number of difficult "tests," as Tally called them. For example, to get the key they needed to enter the hangar where the package was located, they had to climb a thirty-story tower, located on top of another very tall building. When she and Zane arrived at the package, they found the letter for her and the pill. But she discovered there were two pills, not one. This disturbed her. Someone must have seen Tally and Zane because the specials had arrived. Tally was hesitant to take the pills, but she couldn't let the specials see them, so she gave one to Zane and took one for herself..
