  • Essay / Promoting judo to an elite A-level sport in Hong Kong

    In recent years, in order to improve the chances of winning medals in international competitions, the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI ) proposed “elite sports” to help athletes reach an elite level. However, only 16 sporting events have received "Level A" support from the elite training program run by the HKSI since April 2013. The Elite Sports Committee has rejected some popular sports, e.g. judo, football and basketball. The question of whether judo should be included in Hong Kong's elite sports (A-level) has been discussed for several years among Hong Kong academics and universities. Despite HKSI's strong objection, judo should be included in Hong Kong's elite sports (A level), as it brings benefits to the propagation of the spirit of judo, intensifies support for elite athletes from judo and HKSI and promotes the economic growth of Hong Kong. "Judo for all" has been a slogan when actively promoting sporting events, marketing the idea or providing an ornate pretext to increase funding for the sport. Some conservative judo scholars have argued that most bureaucratic organizations have misunderstood the true interpretation of "Judo for All" which arises from the fundamental spirit of Judo itself. According to Ito's (2011) proposition (P. 5), "the main purpose of judo is the cultivation of the mind and moral education as well as physical education." Furthermore, although judo was included in one of the events of the Olympic Games, Professor Jigoro Kano, the founder of judo and representative of the board of directors of the Japanese Olympic Committee, rejected the introduction of judo in 1960.
