  • Essay / Defensive personality studied through personality...

A person with a defensive personality may feel attacked and to deal with it, they must defend their choice of words and actions when dealing with other individuals. My younger sister, Carlee, has a defensive personality. We have the same mother, but different fathers. This caused us to be raised in different situations. She moved around a lot, going from my father's house to our mother's house to her father's house. She didn't have a specific place she could call "home." In general, Carlee is a good child, she listens and doesn't argue too much. However, as brothers and sisters usually do, there are arguments between us. She will very easily become overly defensive and extremely angry. She overreacts to the slightest comments and actions. To discuss his defensive trait, I will discuss the psychological personality trait theories of Lawrence Kohlberg and Erik Erikson. Erickson, a psychologist specializing in psychological stages of development, proposed that personal development is directly influenced by social experiences. One of the main elements of his theory of stage development is the development of ego identity, or the conscious sense of self that develops through social interaction. Conflict at each stage is a central point of Erikson's theory. Each stage of development focuses on conflicts that must be successfully resolved to develop a particular psychological quality. According to his theory, each stage builds on previous stages and, therefore, failure to master specific qualities will affect a person's future development. I believe that to relate the theories to my sister's behavior would take place in step four. There were times that were stressful with his mom and dad, and there...... middle of paper ......n individual. The result can also be the same, although there is variability between personalities. Both Kohlberg and Erikson have strong theories about how personalities are formed at an early age, focusing directly on parents. Overall, the role of adults, whether parents or not, plays an important role in shaping our personality as children. Adults need to understand that when they have children and the marriage dissolves, the focus should be on the children. We must give children an image that will inform them about good ways to behave and defend themselves towards others. If Carlee had grown up in a different setting, in a stable home, she would have had a different personality. She wouldn't be angry so often and she would understand better how to behave if she doesn't agree with what others have to say..
