When people hear the word "hero", they usually don't think of the word "tragic". A tragic hero is a great or virtuous character in a tragedy, destined for downfall, suffering, or defeat. Aristotle also considered the ideas of a tragic hero. William Shakespeare proves this through his character Romeo in Romeo and Juliet. Romeo's family is high-ranking and virtuous. Romeo's punishments exceed his crimes, and his tragedies arouse many "unhealthy emotions of fear and pity." Romeo's actions prove that he is a tragic hero. The story of Romeo and Juliet draws the reader in as the tragedy unfolds through the scenes. One of Romeo's tragic hero traits is his "high position and virtue." For example, Capulet says: “Truly speaking, Verona boasts of being a virtuous and well-governed youth” (Shakespeare 827). Capulet's statement proves that society has a high opinion of Romeo. He is willing to allow an enemy to stay near his ball because of his behavior. Juliet also says, “So if he were not called Romeo, Romeo would retain that dear perfection which he owes without that title” (Shakespeare 839). Juliet explains that Romeo would still be a noble young man without the title of Montague. She would still love Romeo if his name was different. Nurse Romeo is “an honest gentleman, a courteous, kind, and handsome young man” (Shakespeare 857). The nurse thinks Romeo is a good guy even though she prefers Paris. She can't take away the fact that Romeo is in love with Juliet. Another tragic hero trait that Romeo possesses is his eminently great or imperfect appearance. For example, Montague says, “Far from the light he flies…and he shuts himself in his chamber” (Shakespeare 812). Montague's statement explains his son's flaw... middle of paper ... how he feels when he learns of Juliette's death. He will buy a deadly poison to end his life. An example: “Do you want to provoke me? So go ahead, boy! [Fight]… [Paris falls and dies]” (Shakespeare 922). In this statement Romeo, feelings of helplessness and anger overcome him and he kills Paris. His mixed emotions were not handled safely. These examples show how Romeo describes the traits of a tragic hero. As Romeo progresses through the play, he reveals many characteristics that show him to be a tragic hero. Romeo's tendency to jump to conclusions led him to an untimely death. This loss was not a pure loss because he was finally able to find his true love. The many tragedies Romeo endures during the play keep the reader drawn in and very interested. Romeo is not the town superhero or famous in any way, he is a normal guy who endures many falls, sufferings and defeats..
