  • Essay / Improving undernourished populations - 648

7 billion people on Earth, or approximately “852 million people were undernourished in 2000-2002” (Müller and Krawinkel 2), why can't we all working together to end world hunger? Hunger exists worldwide and “malnutrition continues to be a major problem throughout the developing world, particularly in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa” (Müller and Krawinkel 1). We must raise awareness of world hunger and fight it until we overcome hunger and malnutrition. We have enough food for every person on this Earth and if we come together, we can beat hunger. Creating a food or liquid-based nutritional formula could help save thousands of malnourished young children in developing countries by providing essential nutrients like vitamin A or CA formula doesn't necessarily mean milk baby formula. Children over the age of one suffer from malnutrition, a widespread problem in many developing countries. Malnutrition is a lack of essential nutrients in their diet and results from deficiencies in vitamin A, zinc, iron and iodine. More specifically, “malnutrition is a state in which adequate nutrients are not supplied to cells to provide the substrate necessary for optimal functioning” (Uchendu 193). We associate infant formula with baby food, but toddlers in developing countries also need it or more specifically need a substance that can provide them with essential nutrients because they don't often eat nutritious meals. This is not to say that babies do not need this formula. According to Sally Grantham-McGregor, "...malnutrition in the first months of life is not common." By creating a nutrient-rich substance, it can help prevent malnutrition in babies and toddlers and is "the best way to prevent micro...... middle of paper ......ening." The formula, with help from LifeStraw, could help save thousands of children from malnutrition. Imagine a world without malnutrition in third world countries, they could thrive and become someone they never would have been if they were malnourished. Changing one aspect of a child's diet could help improve the course of their life. This could help create a better world and a better life for generations to come.
