Essay / Ravensong by Lee Maracle - 1426
Often when reading a novel the reader connects to one of the characters and begins to empathize with them. This may be because the reader understands what the character is going through or because we see things from the character's point of view and their emotions, which in turn allows a connection to form for the reader. The character that intrigued me the most and the one that I found out of all the books I read in school was Stacey from the book “Ravensong” by Lee Maracle. Stacey's character goes through many internal battles with herself and it is on her path to discovery that she begins to understand herself and what she is capable of. Throughout the novel, Stacey has a few problems that she tries to resolve. This is emphasized in his village and in his school located across the bridge in the White City. Stacey begins to deal with the loss of Nora and her town's eldest child. And so begins the chain of events that Stacey begins on the path of self-discovery, not only about herself but about everyone around her. She begins to see things differently and clearly. Stacey is a very complex and confusing character, and she begins to overcome these complexities through her thoughts, statements, and actions. Stacey experiences a lot of growth as a character, and most of it is through her daily experiences and internal thoughts and struggles with herself. Stacey deals with most of her issues with silence and rarely approaches anyone to share her feelings. These feelings and confusion begin to surface as soon as Nora's funeral begins. Stacey looks around at her own village and the people who live there and the way they are dressed and compares it to the funeral she had attended when her friend... middle of paper... which she is able much more than she herself knows and that there is still a great future for her and for the village. Stacey is the beacon of her city that shows the potential for change and the bridge that symbolizes the separation between these two places. Stacey crosses this bridge daily and in this ending, there is a lot left unsaid about what could happen. Stacey was a difficult character to explore, as her identity continues to confuse her, and in her discoveries, the reader slowly begins to understand her and why she struggles so much and her frustrations. In turn, readers can almost understand her pain because of this and the journey she had to take which did not lead to the realization of her dreams due to the separation that the village and town focused so much on. concentrated.Works CitedMaracle, Lee.
