  • Essay / Radical Women - 569

On Election Day 1920, American women exercised their right to vote for the first time. It took almost 100 years for activists and reformers to convince the United States that women were just as equal as men (Dunlap). Women, like men, deserve all the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, just like men. In the past, they were considered a type of property belonging to either their father or their husband. Women's education focused primarily on "feminine" achievements such as sewing and music. Many 19th century women, like Jane Austen or Mary Wollstonecraft, felt strongly about the treatment of women. In fact, both women wrote radical stories in their time about women's rights. Austen wrote "To Make a Pleasant Marriage" and in it she writes to her niece and her suitor and wonders if he is the right person for her and if he should marry her for "true" love . The more radical of the two texts is Mary Wollstonecraft's "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman" because it shows the need for education, the revolution in female morals and the problem of sensitivity. In “A Vindication of the Rights of Woman,” Wollstonecraft shows her passion for educational reform. Mary saw the need for diversity. She believed that boys and girls would improve if they could work together. Having girls in the class would not hurt performance, Wollstonecraft thought. She believed that they should go to school together from a young age, regardless of gender or class, and have time to develop their physical and mental strengths. She then goes on to explain how women "are still considered a frivolous sex and ridiculed or pitied by writers who endeavor by satire or instruction to improve them." Educational reform was particularly important for women because they lacked a paper portrait gallery. National Portrait Gallery, nd Web.
