  • Essay / What if - 528

Some people wonder what would happen if events had happened differently. In this case, what would happen if John Hinckley succeeded in assassinating Ronald Reagan or what if Anita Hill's sexual harassment charge had never been brought? History would have changed for the worse and for the better, but would it have been worth it? That's the million dollar question. In 1991, Anita Hill was thrust into the national spotlight by bringing the accusation of sexual harassment to the forefront. While Hill worked for the U.S. Department of Education and the Equal Opportunity Commission, she accused the chairman of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, known as the EEOC, of and vacant U.S. Supreme Court President Clarence Thomas of sexual conduct. harassment ten years ago. Although the Federal Bureau of Investigation, also known as the FBI, investigated the accusation, nothing conclusive ever came of it. During Thomas's confirmation hearings for the Supreme Court seat, Anita Hill spoke about the harassment, which was leaked to the media. The Senate Judiciary Committee had no choice but to investigate these accusations. Although Thomas' nomination was ultimately confirmed at the end of the hearing, Anita Hill brought this sensitive issue to the forefront and gave other women the courage to speak out against workplace harassment. Anita Hill gave women hope, but none of this would have happened if she hadn't had the courage to speak out against Clarence Thomas' sexual harassment. Even though the EEOC had defined sexual harassment as sex discrimination ten years before the initial accusation, women were afraid to speak up. Sexual harassment was seen as a problem for victims...in the middle of the paper...it took national prowess to give them the courage to fight back. Works Cited CBSNews (October 20, 2010).
