It is in gaining a sense of our identity that we find a place to belong. This is featured in episode 4, Stand Up, of the television series Redfern Now, directed by Rachael Perkins. On Joel's first day, his parents walk him to the front of the school where they take a photo. This is what the close-up imitating a portrait shows. The photo is taken at a time when Joel feels comfortable and accepted in his family, reinforced by the words of Joel's father "Joely, I'm proud of you, okay." Throughout the episode, we see tension building within the family. Joel's mother prefers to conform to the school and its policies even though it does not fit with the indigenous culture, while Joel's father is a force that pushes Joel in the opposite direction. The pressure Joel experiences from his father who instills his values in him "I never defended this song, not even in the state of origin" is shown in the scene where Joel returns home to do homework which are set for him, learn the national anthem.
